A BRIEF GUIDE TO ST. CATHERINE'S, BEAR WOOD
Introduction
St. Catherine's Church was completed in 1846, the architect being J. H. Good junior. Mr John Walter II, proprietor of the Times, paid for
its erection at a cost of nearly £9000. Its dedication is to St. Catherine of Alexandria who held fast to her Christian faith despite
all forms of inducement or persecution to abandon it and was martyred in the early 4th century. John Walter's daughter Catherine had
died in 1844 aged 23.
This is a living Church, not a Museum,
and we invite our visitors to share in
our worship Sunday by Sunday.
The Church
The Church is built in imitation medieval Gothic style.
The tower is nearly 90' high, the Chancel 20' x 18',
the Nave 60' x 28.5', and the Nave roof is 48' at the
apex. The Church was consecrated by Bishop Samuel
Wilberforce, son of the famous William, leading
abolitionist of the slave trade.
Porch
Notice the window showing Christ and the widow
giving her "mite" to the Temple (See Mark 12 v 41-44).
